Basic description

Summer is a chance for children and youth to continue developing different skills, but for those from undocumented families, summertime experiences can lead to ill health, and social and emotional struggles. With the COVID-19 pandemic, this situation has become even harder.

In response to that, during the summer of 2020, VIA organized a COVID-safe and fun summer camp with disadvantaged Brazilian children within Amsterdam. After this fantastic experience, supported by different organizations, we decided to have another summer camp in 2021. The setup is slightly different and more extensive, but with the same aim: to give these children a memorable week during their summer holidays.

Type of work

Accompanying children.

From the 17th until the 31st of July 2021, we will organize a summer camp where volunteers will organise activities for children and accompany them to museums and other attractions.

The 18th of July is an important day where we will discuss practicalities and finalise the daily programme. The first week is from the 19th to the 23rd of July for 4- to 9-year-old children and will take place in Amsterdam. The second week is from the 26th to the 30th of July and will be for 10- to 13-year-old children. We will leave the city and engage in a week full of participatory activities in the Dutch forest near Apeldoorn.

Study theme

Situation of undocumented children in Amsterdam.

The children will participate in different activities that help enhance social and cognitive skills, teamwork, nonviolent communication, and encourage creativity.

Accommodation First week: a shelter in Amsterdam, second week: a group accommodation geared towards children in Stroe. Language Description English, Dutch, and Portuguese Additional Camp notes

Applicants will be asked to have a skype or zoom meeting with the contact person of VIA to check experiences and motivation.
Experience in working with children is necessary. An asset is when you speak Portuguese or Dutch. Extra motivation is required.
