AIM OF THE PROJECT

The main aim of this YE is to bring together 25 young people from different countries and introduce them to the topic of global co-dependency through getting to know cocoa industry and learning new ways on how to live sustainably. Different non formal activities will give them space to find their own solutions towards more sustainable practices on individual level as well as encourage them to think of ways in which they can spread awareness about the cocoa industry and global co-dependency among others.

DESCRIPTION

The youth exchange Sweet sin was created by young people for young people. They identified increased interest of individuals and the general public in recent months, including political actors for environmental issues, especially in the field of handling (plastic) waste, and consequently calling people to more sustainable behaviour. Sustainable practices are hard to achieve both on an individual and even more so on global level, this is why small meaningful steps need to be made. And one of our beloved commodities, chocolate, is a good way to start questioning our everyday habits, actions and connecting them to the unnecessary practices and systems that “rule the world.”

Why can be buying a generic milk chocolate bar connected to the wounds on children’s legs in Ghana? Is there a link between reduced chocolate consumption in Europe and economy crisis in Ivory Coast?

Are there similar everyday commodities that impact citizens, environment and economies in a similar manner? All this and more will be discussed during our six-day stay in Maribor, Slovenia.

The young people who wrote the project are aware that we are all part of the problem but could have a lesser negative impact if we are aware of what our actions mean and raise awareness amongst others. That is why they decided to gather 25 young people from Estonia, Ireland, France, Slovakia and Slovenia to learn about global interconnectedness through tackling the topic of cocoa production and spread the newly acquired knowledge among citizens of Maribor.

The objectives of the project are as follows:

  • Identification of problems and understanding global co-dependency.
  • Developing strengthening the competence for the ability to think critically in a creative way and to encourage youth to become engaging and active citizens.
  • Strengthening solidarity and empathy among young people and admiration of belonging to the European and the global community.
  • Familiarization of young participants with the Erasmus + program.

The youth exchange will take place in Slovenia in August 2019, where 25 young people will gather for a six-day exchange. Using informal learning methods for young people, we will show the importance of active citizenship and the power that we have as individuals and especially as a group with the same goal. While interacting with others and with the local community, we will discover the benefits and challenges of Europe's intercultural character, and raise awareness in questioning our attitude to diversity in connection with the topic of the youth exchange.
