Introduction: In 1945 the recreation centre "Heideruh" was built by antifascists to support the survivors of the Nazi regime. Relatives, survivors, and friends built a place of refuge amidst woodland where they could regain strength to continue their fight for a better world. Until today, Heideruh is a recreation area for anti-fascists. Very often like-minded people from different generations meet up there. Furthermore, 9 asylum seekers from North Sudan and Arabic countries are accommodated and supported in Heideruh. Now, the place is to be made more attractive to younger generations, preparing for a time without contemporary witnesses. The camp includes a big study part. In approx. 50 % of the time will deal with the topics antifascism and feminism/ gender.

Type of Work: (ca. 6 days): Maintenance, repair, and extension of the "barefoot walking path" and the "all generations" playground, the focal points are on working with wood, you learn different techniques and also how to use several machines. Everybody is welcome to try it out!

Study Theme: (ca. 7 days): Documentation of the work and camp, preparation of a public commemoration ceremony for the town festival of Buchholz, meeting witnesses and guests, visiting Hamburg-Neuengamme memorial site, partly drawn up by the Auschwitz committee, meeting survivors and international guests.

Accommodation: Accommodation in double or three-bedrooms, on some days, when there will be many guests at Heideruh, it might be possible that some volunteers will have to move to tents, which will be provided by the project. There is a seminar room. Heideruh has a cantine, you will partly eat in the cantine. Vegetarian and vegan is possible in the cantine and some help in the kitchen might be required. Partly you will prepare your own food (mainly breakfast) in a small kitchen for guests.

Language: Good knowledge of English and/ or German would be helpful.

Qualifications: Being interested in anti-fascism and feminism, showing consideration for elderly, being interested in manageable building projects and thoughts.

Location: Buchholz is located in North-West Germany, only 40 kilometres south from Hamburg. The area around Buchholz impresses with its National Parks in the "Heath of Lüneburg" (Lüneburger Heide); Heideruh is situated in a big forest, you can walk to the Lüneburger Heide in roughly 45 minutes along a very nice landscape.

Transport hub: The nearest airports are located in Hamburg and Bremen. From the Central Station, it is 20 minutes to Buchholz from Hamburg and 60 minutes from Bremen by train. If you take the train, inform Heideruh, you will be picked up in front of the railway building. It might be possible to arrive earlier (please ask before) , but please don´t arrive later.

Notes: There is a small bar belonging to Heideruh, where you can spend the evenings. You can buy soft drinks, beer, whine and some sweets there. Two weekends will be free.
