Všeobecný popis

Introduction: In 2003 the Wilderness Dürrenstein was recognized as the first category I wilderness area in Austria, according to the criteria of the IUCN. They seek to protect the unique forest and landscape, endangered organisms and habitats, whereas the natural processes are allowed to unfold without human intervention. The area of the Wilderness Dürrenstein was expanded repeatedly, increasing the area of protected land to 3.500 hectares. Until this great accomplishment in some parts of these areas invasive plants have already been introduced unintentionally. We will remove invasive plants in order to prevent irreversible anthropogenic effects on the ecosystem. In addition to invasive species in Thayatal National Park, there are some very immensely diverse dry grassland areas to be managed.

Type of Work: We will remove invasive plants in order to prevent irreversible anthropogenic effects on the ecosystem. Secondly, we will mow dry grassland areas and also selectively remove bushes and small tress to prevent the forest to overgrow these species-rich open habitats. We will also have time to get to know each other and enjoy the summer in Austria.

Study Theme: Participants will learn about the different, partly very rare and precious ecosystems in the wilderness area Dürrenstein and the Thayatal National Park. They will learn what topics are important and what kind of work is necessary to protect and preserve the natural heritage. This will be accomplished through the work itself but also during excursions which are partially led to no-entry-places. Participant have also the chance to get in touch with nature professionals as well as with like-minded volunteers with whom they will work in a team.

Accommodation: For the time of your stay at wilderness Dürrenstein you will sleep at different fully equipped bed and breakfasts. At Thayatal National Park you will be staying in the recently built Wildcat Camp. The facility is equipped with bedrooms for up to 6 persons with bathrooms, a common room and kitchen. Wireless LAN will be available in the Camp. Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner will be provided either in the camp, at the work site or in nearby restaurants. During the camp we will also cook together. This will also be an opportunity to share international food culture and cooking styles.

Qualifications: We will be working about 6 hours, 4 days a week – sometimes in steep terrain, on hot days, but also very cold or rainy days etc. Therefore, some basic fitness is required. Before you sign up for this camp PLEASE make sure that you are healthy enough to participate. If you have any underlying conditions such as allergies (to food, bees, pollen, penicillin etc.), heart conditions, epilepsy, trouble

Location: Göstling is also a small village with two supermarkets, two sport shops, a bakery, a tobacconist’s, a post office and many cafés and restaurants. There are two local doctors and the next hospital is in Scheibbs, which is about 30 min. away by car. Hardegg (next to Thayatal Nationalpark) is the smallest town in Austria, with only 90 inhabitants, right at the border to the Czech Republic. Despite its remoteness it has a small grocery store and two restaurants and a local doctor, the closest hospital is in Horn (30 min by car). In the close by city of Retz you will find more Restaurants Cafés.

Transport hub: Train connections from Vienna/Wien:There are several train stations in Vienna, but for Ybbs you will be leaving either from Wien Westbahnhof or Wien Hauptbahnhof. If you land at Vienna airport, you can reach these stations with the Vienna Airport Bus (Westbahnhof) or by train (Hauptbahnhof). There is also the City Airport Train (CAT) or the cheaper S-Bahn, which will take you to the station Landstraße/Wien Mitte. From there you can reach either of the two train stations via underground.Train connections from Salzburg/Linz: If you land in Salzburg, you can go to the main train station by bus and then take a fast train (either Westbahn or ÖBB) to Linz or Amstetten and change onto the regional train there. (If you land in Munich, you will have to take a train to Salzburg first.)
