Join our group of volunteers and help clean branches, plants and rubbish from three streams in Oberzissen to avoid flooding.
Three small streams lead through the village of Oberzissen in the west of Germany. These streams were underground for many years. In the last years, the community has put them above ground, so that they are an important part of the village centre again. But they are like canals, so branches from trees and plants as well as rubbish easily block them. When it rains heavily, the streams might flood the village centre with water.
The village of Oberzissen needs help in cleaning the three streams to avoid floodings. In this workcamp, you will…
• …clear 300m of stream by cutting trees and plants that grow along the water
• …make the streams safer: Under the guidance of a master painter, you will clean, sand down and paint the hand rail next to the streams. The streams are much lower than the roads, so help us make sure that nobody - especially not children - falls into the water.
Your workplace is in the middle of the village, so you will meet lots of locals while working. Some smaller additional tasks will complete the project. Ubytovanie You will live and sleep in the buildings of the local soccer club and the sportshall. You can use their kitchen and showers as well as mats for sleeping. Please bring a sleeping bag. Oberzissen is a village with 1.100 inhabitants close to the city of Bonn. In the village, you will find two pubs, an ice-cream parlour and – most importantly – many friendly people. A historic railway leads through the village with a real steam engine running on weekends.
On Whit Monday, May 21st, you will attend a special cultural event in Oberzissen: A catholic procession with horses and tractors will start in the village and lead all the way to the neighbouring village and its chapel.
Oberzissen is surrounded by a beautiful landscape, so in your free time you can go hiking, discover nature, have barbecues, and get to know the local inhabitants during different activities together. You can find the closest supermarkets in the next village close-by. You will spend most of your time with the people in Oberzissen, but you will enjoy a few excursions on your days off - maybe to the Rhine valley or to Bonn or Cologne.
