Volcare is a small charity in south east Kent providing home based respite care to carers of elderly and/or disabled dependents with special needs.
Volunteers will help by getting to know the carer and cared for person and the daily routine and personal care needed by each individual family. Volunteers will then take over the carer’s role for occasional periods of time ranging from one day up to one to two weeks. Companionship is a very important part of the role. Volcare help carers caring for people with: Parkinson’s Disease, Dementia, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, head injuries, learning disabilities, Autism, and many more conditions.
You will receive a comprehensive training and induction programme which covers topics such as first aid, medication, and moving/handling people safely.
Volunteers will either stay in a house where there are 4 volunteers in Canterbury or a flat/apartment where there are two volunteers in Dover. All facilities are provided, including wifi internet and there is a telephone to receive incoming calls which accepts international cards. Volcare will provide volunteers with a food and pocket money allowance.
It is important that volunteers are able to take breaks from their volunteering role in order to relax and recharge their energy. Approximately every four months the volunteer completes they will be able to take one week’s break with their weekly expenses paid.
Excellent communication skills and an interest in people are absolutely essential. This will ideally suit someone wanting a career in social work, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy etc. Volcare provides all of the support and training. This is a great opportunity for the right volunteer. Volunteers need to use public transport on a regular basis to visit families so volunteers will need to be able to use timetables and maps. All travel required within the project will be paid for. This project is only open to female volunteers.
