Všeobecný popis

Introduction: 'Torri Superiore Cultural Association' was founded in 1989 with the aim to recover the abandoned medieval village of Torri Superiore and give life to a new resident community. The project was supported by volunteer camps organized in cooperation with SCI and Legambiente between 1992 and 2005. Today Torri Superiore is inhabited by a community of about 25 residents, that has its own cooperative which runs the agricultural and touristic activities. It is a founding member of the Italian Network of Ecological Villages (RIVE) and a member of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN). Torri Superiore is also a founding member of the Italian Academy of Permaculture and an active member of the European CLIPS program, which organizes trainings specialized in creation of new intentional communities.

Type of Work: The work will be focused mainly on the reconstruction of traditional dry stone walls, declared a World Heritage Site a few months ago. The walls are located in the vicinity of ecovillage, and have both agricultural and landscape value. The community leaders, who are experts in laying stones and handling soil, will also be part of the working group. The work is challenging but also very rewarding, since it implies the reconstruction of ancient structures with traditional and sustainable methods. In addition, the volunteers will take turns to help with the preparation of meals and the maintenance of the guest house.

Study Theme: The study part will focus on the presentation of the local community and the movement of Italian and foreign ecovillages, as well as on elements of permaculture and landscape observation.

Accommodation: The volunteers will be accommodated in several rooms in the ecovillage. Meals are prepared by the staff of the cooperative that runs the ecovillage guest house. The group of volunteers will also have at their disposal a large hall for meetings and training, a small yoga room, and a library with books in various languages. Wifi is available in the rooms, in the library and in the living room. It is important to bring your own towels.

Language: The official language is English. However, Italian, German and French are also spoken in the workcamp.

Qualifications: Ability to carry out tasks that require manual work and physical efforts for several hours per day. Volunteers must bring heavy shoes, long pants, shorts and a sun hat.

Location: The camp is located in the ecovillage of Torri Superiore, 10 km away from the city of Ventimiglia, the last Italian coastal town near the border with France. It is located in Val Bevera, a beautiful valley with an intact and almost wild nature, cultivated with olive trees, lemons, mimosas and brooms.

Transport hub: By plane: The nearest airports are those of Nice (50 Km) and Genoa Cristoforo Colombo (150 Km). Continue by train to Ventimiglia station, and then take a taxi or bus. By car: From Genoa or France: exit the A10 at the Ventimiglia tollbooth, continue towards Colle di Tenda - Cuneo, after the tunnel go straight to the town of Bevera (along the Metro supermarket). From Bevera, follow the directions (about 4 km.). From Turin: drive along the SS 20 of Colle di Tenda, after Porra (Km. 146.6) turn towards the entrance to the motorway and continue to the right towards Bevera (as above).
