About Belarus

Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe bordered by Russia to the northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Minsk is the capital of
Belarus; other major cities include Brest, Grodno (Hrodna), Gomel (Homiel), Vitebsk (Vitsebsk) and Mogilev (Mahiliou). The territory of Belarus is 207,595 km2. The population is 9, 481,000 people (2014).

Belarus has temperate continental climate. The average temperature in January is -6°C, average temperature in July is +18°C. However, nowadays the weather is very changeable, it can be very hot (+35°C) and very rainy in summer, very cold (-27 °C) and snowy in winter.
Belarus is generally a very flat country (the highest hill is Mount Dzyarzhynskaya, 346 meters). About 40 % of the country is forested. There are more than 10,000 lakes in Belarus. All in all,
Belarusian nature is very beautiful and picturesque. Belarus has a long, complicated history and it can become a real adventure and great experience for the volunteers to visit our projects and to see how different, yet in many ways so similar to other European countries Belarus is!
Belarus has four World Heritage Sites: the Mir Castle Complex, the Niasvizh Castle, the Belovezhskaya Pushcha (shared with Poland), and the Struve Geodetic Arc (shared with nine other
countries).

The Belarusian people are known for their hospitality, so we will be glad to host your motivated volunteers in our amazing workcamps!

3 very important facts

1. You don't need visa only if you come to Belarus through Minsk National Airport and if you stay here up to 30 days. Citizens of many countries who come with the train, bus, car etc. need visa.

Here you can find more info on the topic: http://mfa.gov.by/en/visa). We provide the volunteers with the invitation letter and will be happy to give advice or any information about how and where to apply for visa.

2. All the foreign citizens have to be insured while staying in Belarus. The volunteers will have to obtain the insurance on their own.

3. All foreign citizens who stay in Belarus for more than 5 working days should be registered in the local migration office. This procedure will be done by the camp leaders.

Location and infrastructure: The workcamp is situated in Uzda, Minsk region, Belarus (65 km from Minsk). The town is known since the 15th century and has several tourist attractions. The infrastructure is well-developed, so you will find everything necessary here: banks and currency exchange offices, shops, bars and cafes, pharmacy, local market, post-office etc.

Work&Leisure time: The camp for Belarusian high school pupils aged 12–18 and pupils of the same age from abroad (neighboring countries - Ukraine, Russia) takes place every year in the ancient town of Uzda. Foreign volunteers work independently (with the help of Belarusian teachers and volunteers) to plan, prepare and perform non-formal interactive language classes for children in order to improve their conversational skills. You will work max 5 hours per day in the morning and before the lunch. But in the afternoon and in the evening you are welcome to enjoy the activities held by the Belarusian volunteers (debates, movies, sports, table games, outdoor games, music, dancing, crafts, fine arts, etc).
English is supposed to be the only means of communication in the camps—it will challenge stereotypes or prejudices and establish new contacts between nations. Accommodation&Food: The participants will live in the dormitory of the local restoration school (3-4 people in one room). 4 meals a day, participants will be on duty to help the local kitchen lady with
cooking. We cannot provide a vegetarian or vegan menu.

What to bring: Materials that will help you to teach English, interesting games or whatever for leisure, musical instruments (optional), towels, toiletries, warm clothes (in the evening the temperature can be about +15). You do not have to bring a sleeping bag, a roll mat or bed sheets.
